Commencing Tuesday the 21st of September Sammy will be running stable management sessions covering all topics of the BHS Challenge awards -About the horse. All of the topics will teach you how to practise to industry standard and are recognised within the equine sector.
These are divided into 4 topics:
- Knowing your horse
- Handling your horse
- Caring for your horse
- Lunging your horse
Each topic in awarded a certificate on completion and progression onto the next level. (bronze-silver-gold-platinum) Silver level is BHS Stage 1 equivalent and can be used as direct entry to stage 2 care and lunge assessment if this was desired in the future.
5pm – Bronze level
e.x of covered topics:
1. Anatomy, signs of good and poor health, horse fitness and markings
2. How to work safely, tack, general leading of your horse
3. Grooming, field care, rugging and routine care
4. Reasons for lunging, equipment and skills for lunging
6:15 – Silver level
e.x of covered topics:
1. Breeds, organs and functions, how to look after your horses health, ensure welfare is met.
2. Handling your horse for inspection. Tack fitting, use of boots.
3. How horses communicate, advance grooming and field maintenance
4. How to lunge safely and effectively.
Books for each session cost a total of £32 for the set. We have spread this cost across the courses, so whilst the lessons are £7 each, a group of 6 lessons (and booklet and certificate for that topic) will cost £50. We thought this was the most cost effective way of doing it. Alternatively you may just book individual sessions without the books just as a learning/social session among people with the same passion. I will try and update the newsletter of the topics covered each week prior for those who would like to do specific topics. I can help guide those on what level to book if there are any queries. Books can be completed in your own time, there is no time scale!
Each session is £7 for the hour or £5 if you are a volunteer with us here at the centre. These sessions are a great way to learn a new skill, practise your knowledge, potential for progression at industry standard and to be social weekly. Please email Sammy for the discount code.
